Here we are at the first of May and I am wondering what happened to April? The days are getting longer and the temperatures are into the high 50s. Last week we had Thursday off because it was a national holiday celebrating the first day of Summer!! I was really surprised since I was still waiting for Spring to arrive. Actually, Spring is starting to show itself with green grass and moss replacing the snow over the land. A few flowers are blooming and the trees have buds on them.
Easter is celebrated here with a holiday that begins with the Thursday before Good Friday and goes through the following Monday. Since the archive was closed over those days, we decided to travel and see some sights. We traveled to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula which is about two hours from Reykjavik. You can see a sampling of all the diversity in this country on this peninsula. One side has a stark landscape of mostly lava rock. The other side has beautiful green hills and waterfalls. We also traveled to the South coast to the village of Vik. Here are some pictures of our travels over those days. Of course, the weather was overcast, windy and rainy.....we had about 15 minutes of sun during this time!

Coming over to visit. Very friendly! |

If you walk up to their fence, they will come over to visit with you. They remind me a little bit of the Highland cows with their manes over their eyes. They are small but sturdy little animals. |

Our work in the archives is going well. Allan is just about finished with the 1950 census and then will begin on the 1960 census.
Our boss from England will be visiting us in May to get a new camera set up and arrange camera training for us.
I am working on probate records for one of the syslas (counties). Every piece of paper is a different size. Fortunately, my scanner has an automatic crop feature that adjusts the crop to each paper size. My concern is that, if we are suppose to go to camera capture only, I won't have that feature and I will need to crop each paper manually. That won't be very efficient. So, I am a little worried that I won't be able to finish my project on the scanner. We will just have to wait and see how this all unfolds.
We were blessed with a new refrigerator yesterday! I now have a fridge that gets cold on the inside!! It is cold from the top to the bottom and even in the door. We have struggled with our old fridge that only got cold (sort of) on the top shelf. A lot of food was spoiled before we could use it due to the fridge being so warm. We are excited and grateful to have this new appliance.
April has just sped by - as evidenced by the fact that it is May and the April blog is still in my computer.
It has been a good month beginning with a fantastic General Conference (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints holds two General Conferences a year). One theme I heard about 3 or 4 times was that "time is running out", "these are the last days", "don't put off your day of repentance", etc. Was super excited to hear about a temple that will be built in Hungary where our grandson, Jacob, is serving his mission.
Next we had Easter and the observance of our Savior's Crucifixion and Resurrection!
Have a glorious Spring!
So good to hear from you as usual. April was spent traveling with the first trip to San Diego where our first granddaughter was sealed in n the San Diego Temple. Home for a few days then left for Playa de Carmen for 10 days. We return home tomorrow. It has been a very fun month. Still making preps for our mission in November. Sending love and prayers. ReplyDeleteWe enjoy your blog and hearing how you are doing so much. It is has been such a wet spring here and unusually cool. It is May 31 and last night after the sun went down I had to put on a jacket. We have hardly used the sprinklers. But that is about to change. We will be jumping into the 90s in the next few days, but we have enjoyed the cool spring. We have kind of lost the last 6 weeks. Mike had knee replacement surgery on April 23 and we have had a steady string of company or tending grandchildren since then. He is doing fine in his recovery, although it is always slower than you want. It takes a good 3 months to feel better and 6-12 months to really get back doing all he wants to do. He is helping with the Stake Youth Trek this week by pulling a trailer of stuff around for them since he can't walk very far yet. They hiked from Baker Reservoir to Pine Valley and camped there, and then up to the Pine Valley Cemetery area to camp last night. It was beautiful up there, so very green and still snow in the mountains. Crazy for St. George!!! We send our love and prayers always to you as you serve.
