Over the Hump

Ten months down - eight more to go!! It is really hard to believe that we are getting close to our one year mark for this mission. October has been a fairly quiet month.   No travels and no visitors! We have had one slight dusting of snow and our daylight hours are down to around 8 hours.  It will eventually drop to 4 hours during mid-December. Our work in the archive keeps us busy. We had the choice experience of imaging  Iceland's 1703 Census. The census is kept in specially made boxes.  There are actually two boxes - one fits inside the other. Removing the census from the acid-free paper. The 1703 Census! Taking pictures of the census with the camera.  Best and fastest camera man I know. Imaging these records was a real privilege.  In 2013 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) approved the Archives' application for the inclusion of the 1703 Census in UNES...

Fall Has Arrived

September started off with a weekend visit from our counterparts in Denmark, Todd and Tara Hansen.  They came to Iceland to see the country and where we worked in the archives.  We had a good time comparing notes about the work of preserving records.  We certainly enjoyed getting to know them better and to be their tour guides for the Saturday they were here.    Once more, we drove the Golden Circle with lunch at our favorite place to have all you can eat soup and bread.  We ate some of the bread that had been baked in the hot, hot ground outside the restaurant. We took them to church with us on Sunday and had them for dinner afterwards.  It was a great visit and we hope to visit them in Denmark before we go home!   Bread baking in the hot sand by the lake.  One actually being dug up!  Takes 24 hours until done!! More bread baking under the sand.  They place a rock on top of the mound so it won't be stepped on...

OOPS! What do you mean it's SEPTEMBER!!!

Well, I knew it would happen sooner or later.....I didn't get the blog done in the month it was suppose to be done in.  Nothing carved in stone, but I had a goal to send one out every month.  August marked a new adventure in our Iceland Saga.  We had our last holiday until Christmas and we were able to drive to the Westfjords. Our travels took us to Patreksfjörður, then to  Ísafjörður and, finally, Holmavik. The following pictures are some of the highlights of this beautiful area of Iceland. Stunning sunset! Trip to the Sheep Museum outside of Holmavik. Didn't realize there were so many different kinds of sheep! The resident orphan that thinks it is a dog!  It was born this past Spring.  A lot bigger "lamb" than I had expected to see. Of course, chickens on the sheep farm.  They were more than friendly! Holmavik Guest House Every community - even small farms - have these little cha...
